Grådybet 73A. A folded steel tower on the edge of the harbour, lit from the inside like a lantern. Most people walk past it. The lift is on the left.

Rooftops flatten. The container cranes shrink. Somewhere below, the last of the traffic on Gammelby Ringvej.

Sixty-six metres up
The doors open onto a dining room with glass on every side — north to south, the North Sea on one horizon and Fanø on the other. Then somebody hands you a glass.

It is a small Danish saying, and it is the whole restaurant. Plates was built so that a plate lands in the middle of the table and starts a conversation — not so that four people eat four separate dinners in silence at altitude.

Everything is shared
The menu splits two ways: hand the evening to the head chef and let a sharing menu travel the whole kitchen, or let the table pick its own path through meat, fish, salads and sweets. Either way it arrives in the middle.

Danish–French, no ceremony
Bistro cooking with a Nordic accent — Hopballe Mølle chicken, new Danish potatoes, butter-fried haddock — and Burgundy by the glass at prices that don't require an occasion.

Room for a hundred and twenty
Birthdays, receptions, conferences and the odd Tuesday. The dining room takes the lot without ever feeling like a function hall.

Lunch runs from half eleven. The bar runs until two in the morning. Somewhere in between, the room changes character entirely — and most people stay for it.

The house's own cocktails, named with a smile. They arrive under a cloud and clear to something bright. Best ordered before the sun starts going down over Fanø.

The kitchen goes quiet at half nine. The bar does not close before two. Rosemary, pink pepper and a foam you can rest a sprig on.
